Culture

My grandparents grew up in the same location that I did, meaning that we grew up with the same people and the environment. But, although I may have grown up in the same culture that they lived in, it certainly changed by the time it got to me, as I am sure it will by the time it gets to the next generations to come.

For this topic, we are going to be looking at culture as the people and things that people did, and do. Cultures change depending on where you are in the world, but also the time period. Obviously, we know what our culture looks like now, so let us see what it was when my grandparents grew up.

Quotes From My Grandparents...

"Everything revolved around family and school. We didn't have a lot of organized sports teams or clubs or youth group activities, so our schedules were less busy. We played outside in the neighborhood after school, then were all home every night for dinner. We rarely had evening activities to go to so families were closer to each other, homework was a priority, and school nights were less hectic." - Grandma.
My grandparent's wedding photo "There was a lot of turmoil in the world. There were race riots in Detroit and a lot of racial tension where I was born, in Pontiac, Michigan.
The US was also in a war in Vietnam that wasn’t very positive.
American Bandstand was a very popular TV program with the latest music and dancing. Since I was not allowed to dance I would watch it out of curiosity.
The Beatles, a musical group from Britain, had come to the US in late 1964. They had long hair for those days and conservative adults thought they looked terrible. Most of the boys wore very short hair. So pretty soon there were “Beatle Wigs” for sale everywhere. I bought one so I could be “cool” and have long hair." - Grandpa.

What It Was Like For Me...

As I was growing up, I don't remember very much about the world around me, as I was fairly sheltered and thankfully kept away from some of the tensions of our culture. However, as I got older, I was able to understand more of the good and bad. Many aspects of our culture are very sensitive, so I won't talk much about them here. However, if you would like to learn more about what was going on in our world when my grandparents were my age, check out this little website I found: What happened in the 1960s? What changed the most between our eras was most likely home life. The longings and environments of homes were different for my grandparents growing up than it is for me now. Actually, this could easily tie into the previous topic about technology, as it was a large factor in the change.
