Past vs Present

Equality

Equality in our generation have improved and changed a lot since the 1940s, though there is a lot to improve further. People have worked hard for Equal Pay, Equal Rights and reduce racial inequality. This page talks about those inequalities and how they have improved for the better.

How much have we come along in these 60 years?

Grandparents 1940-50s

  • In the 1940s, racial segregation was a big thing. People of color, mostly African American, did not have the same rights as white Americans, and they were not treated equally either. But not only African American experienced this. Japanese Americans were put in internment camps, Hispanic teenagers were attacked, Chinese Americans struggled against anti-Chinese racism, and American Indians were denied access to the ballot.
  • In India, the caste system was deeply rooted. It was very bad. People were identified as upper class or untouchables. It was similar or worse than slavery. The untouchables were not allowed to stay within the village. Their kids were not allowed to play with kids from other groups.
  • Gender equality was also a problem in the 1940s. Women didn't get the same pay as men who were doing the same job, and some jobs got categorized as women's work with lower wages. During World War II, while the men went away to the war, women stepped in for the jobs they had left behind. Once the men came back from the war, women were expected to leave their jobs, or get demoted.

    Our Generation 2000-2010

  • Now, racial equality has improved as America elected our first person of color as president in 2008, but it has not completely stopped. There were police killings of black people, and people of color still get treated different. Social Media has become a voice in racial justice reform with the Black Lives Matter social justice movement.
  • There is a lot of improvement in India as well in terms of the caste system. There are many opportunities available to people who were discriminated earlier. Its slowly going away in the metros and cities, but still seen in villages. Religious discrimnation is still prevelant.
  • Now, gender equality has also improved and women's voices are louder than ever. Also, the pay gap has gotten smaller and women are taking jobs in more fields that were earlier male dominated.
