Differences in Entertainment Methods

Children playing on a sidewalk

If we time-travel to the 1940's and 1950's, which is the decade in which my grandparents grew up, televisions were only starting to get popular. Back then, children used other methods of entertainment. My grandmother liked using chalk to create a hospital on the pavement and catching bugs to use as her "patients". She played bakery on stairs, Red-Rover, and Simon Says. She also enjoyed dodgeball, marbles, jacks, roller skating, and ice skating. My grandfather liked making slingshots and archery sets, using cherry pits to play marbles, playing hopscotch, playing ball, and going on walks.

A lot has changed since then. If you look at playgrounds, you might still see children playing hopscotch, pretending or doodling with chalk, but chances are, you're more likely to see children playing with their phones or tablets. The use of technology has accelerated drastically since the time that my grandparents were growing up.

Social Media Platforms

Today in a technology-influenced world, I find that nearly all of the peers I meet entertain themselves with some sort of electronic device, be it a computer, smartphone, tablet, or watch. Even my little sister has a $7 selfie watch that she's obsessed with. I've been primarily homeschooled my entire life, so my understanding of the purpose of technology has been rather limited, though I do enjoy watching movies with the rest of my family.

My entertainment options come from various sources. I enjoy reading, writing, and drawing, so I can be found doing those things, usually interchangeably (I haven't tried simultaneously... yet). I also enjoy playing with things that involve thinking or making, so I like loom knitting, playing with blocks and Legos, and attempting to play any instrument I can get my hands on (piano, trombone, guitar). I don't spend much time online, apart from school.
