It was in the first season that Avatar Korra had to learn to unlock her airbending and connect to the spiritual realm of the Avatar as well as fight the villain of the season named Amon. Amon and his followers, known as the Equalists were spreading anti-bending propaganda by creating violence throughout Republic City. It was then later revealed that Amon had the ability to take bending away which he had done to the citizens of the city as well as Korra. At the end of the season through hard work, Avatar Korra was able to unlock her airbending which was not taken away by Amon, and expose the fact that he was a water-bender named Noatak. In the end, Korra only had her air-bending and though she thought all was lost with getting the rest of her bending back she was able to connect to the past avatars that helped her restore her bending as well as others.
