Voicing Her Political Opinion

In 2020, Taylor Swift released her Netflix documentary Miss Americana. In the film, she discusses the battles and triumphs she faced in the past decade. Swift talks about her urge to speak of political matters, specifically of Marsha Blackburn. She was running for Senator of Tennessee, also the state Taylor grew up in. Blackburn was against gay marriage, against womens’ rights, and against abortion. Taylor had strong opinions against her, but was hesitant to speak out. She recalled how during George W. Bush's term, the famous country group The Dixie Chicks expressed their disapproval of Bush in a live performance. They faced tons of backlash and people went out and protested against them. Swift knew that since then it was unheard of for young country artists to be vocal about political issues. However, she knew she had to speak out, so she worked with her publicist and carefully planned how she would go public in supporting the democratic candidate in the race. In the end, Marsha Blackburn won, but Taylor did not give up. She still speaks out about politics and human rights ‘till this day. It is so inspiring in the fact that she broke the cycle of keeping opinions quieted to keep respect of others. She knew she would face backlash like The Dixie Chicks, but she powered through and did not let that stop her.
