About Me!

Hi there! My name is Yumna Dagher and I’m a 10th grader at Fordson High school.Image: A drawing of me saying Thank you for taking a look at my website I am apart of the class of 2020. In my free time, I enjoy researching about fashion, making art, ceramics, reading, hanging out with my friends, drawing, writing poetry, and being an advocate for girls of color and feminism. My favorite artists are Mariko Mori and Kara Walker. My grades are very important to me and I maintain a 4.0 GPA. This year, I’m taking AP U.S History and other Honors classes, which have been an exciting challenge for me. I'm unsure of what my future career will be, but I'm interested in the environmental, art, and technology fields. I care very deeply about our planet and it's organisms! I love how this project gives a chance for us girls to enter ourselves into a typically male-dominated field as well as helping us develop our skills. I also love how I can share my and other girl’s stories of self-love and bridging our experiences as well! Thank you MCWT for this amazing opportunity.

History and Reflections

Image: Composition notebook Mrs. Candela, the web design instructor at Camp Infinity, which just so happens to be run by MCWT, originally introduced me to this contest! With her instruction, we created a simple, five-page website based on a topic of choice. Camp Infinity gave me several memorable learning experiences that I will never forget, but other than the Camp Infinity instruction; I’ve had no formal web design courses or computer classes. Instead, I used We3Schools, Codeacademy, and Khan Academy to sharpen my skills. Codeacademy's HTML and CSS courses are both extremely helpful. My favorite thing about doing this project was researching female artists, creating art and graphics for the website, and having my friends share their experiences. I thank them for being so open and honest.
Perhaps my greatest difficulty was getting done on time. Going into the competition, I thought I would get done in two weeks maximum. I was definitely wrong! I had to start over, scrap ideas at last minute, and juggle coding with schoolwork. The approaching deadline was looming, but sometimes, it's important to focus and move along. I've also learned that to work on such a huge project like this one, you really need to stay focused, work hard, and get motivated! You need to be very organized and on top of everything. I actually did not use indentation last year in the competition and my code was super messy! This year, I made sure that my code was neat and clean. Yet another thing I learned from this experience is to be extra observant. Last year, my website images did not show up in the final uploaded version because I did not put them in an images folder. This year, I made sure to be more aware of my possible errors. I also feel like I can't look at websites the same anymore, and am constantly tempted to open the source code. That may sound weird, but it speaks volumes as to how much work I dedicated to this website! I feel extremely rewarded in experience though, which is most important.
