Environmental Activist:
Rachel Carson

How has transportation changed?

The final influential woman on our site is Rachel Carson, a famous environmentalist from the 20th century. She was able to make groundbreaking discoveries about the harm of fertilizers on human health and nature and was a driving force in influencing many environmental policies. Rachel Carson started her career as an aquatic biologist in the U.S. Bureau of Fisheries. She began to write about nature in the 1950s. She wrote a trilogy about sea life which became incredibly famous, and later wrote Silent Spring.

This work was based off of her research on the harmful effects of DDT, a type of fertilizer. Carson highlighted many harmful effects of this fertilizer and was able to influence many countries around the world to ban its use. She testified in court as an expert witness in several policy hearings, solidifying the United States’ environmental legislation.

I chose Rachel Carson as one of the influential women for this site because she was a pioneer in her work. She took a crucial concept and wrote it in a way that showed the whole world that they needed to prioritize and save the environment.
