The Gap Between Two Generations

Life in High School

I’m currently a high school student and I wanted to compare how some aspects of this generation's high school life differs from my grandparent's.

High School Stress

As a highschooler, I see my day consist of mostly homework and extracurricular activities. In this era, schools and getting into colleges have been becoming competitive. In order to be the best, you have to climb great heights to get into competitive colleges. Grades, classes, clubs, leadership… it can wear any student down. But in my grandparent’s era, their education wasn’t as competitive. Though there was still education and competition, you didn’t have to be a superhuman in order to stand out. Education is more important in the present and most families want their kids to attend college.

Perfection

In high school, there’s a conception that you have to be “perfect”. As in you have to be able to juggle aspects of your life equally. You should do well in school, have a social life, get enough sleep, be active on social media and such. I mean not everyone achieves these things, especially not sleep. But, this is the state we aspire to be in. This is most likely the same for high school students in my grandparent’s era. They all want to achieve the equilibrium to look put together. But,there’s another stress in this generation. Because of social media, our perspectives have become different from the mass consumption of these sites. There’s a need to look perfect and have an aesthetically pleasing life. And this is hard to shake off since it's the only thing we are subjected to when we open a social media app.
