The Gap Between Two Generations

Technology

Technology is a broad spectrum to explore from but it’s the most visible to change across the eras. The technology that made the most impact on us directly are communication, medical, and space technology.

Medical Technology

In the 1950s, many advances were made in medicine. Some major breakthroughs included the creation of the polio vaccine and the discovery of new drugs, such as tranquilizers. However, despite these advances, there were minimal efforts to assist the mentally ill. Back then, the science in medicine was still lacking, but now there's more knowledge and the means to discover more of the unknown. There have been numerous advances and creations in medicine. Medical equipment has become modern and convenient. Some major breakthroughs include robotic surgeries and using artificial organs. Virtual reality and 3-D printing have also been introduced into the medical field. There’s more support for bettering mental health and therapy is becoming more popular. The improvements made in the present help us improve our health and speed up recovery. It would be better to get treated in the present because the hospitals are better equipped and safer.

Communication Technology

Some of the best technology created in the 1950s was optic fibers, transistor radios, and computer hard disks. The commonly used technologies were household appliances because they were the most useful. However, televisions were becoming popular and were part of most family's household. There were computers at that time, but they were humongous and inconvenient to use. But, technology has come far now. Smartphones, GPS, automobiles, and the list goes on. These creations have adapted to fit all our needs and be as efficient as possible. Smartphones and laptops are by everyone's side because they are convenient to use and carry. They keep on improving and have become a staple use in our lives. Advancement in communication technology has made the most impact on us, allowing us to communicate in less time and more accuracy. We can send instant texts to friends, who live away, which would otherwise take days with the mailing system my grandparents used. The modern day technology has many benefits such as communication and exchanging ideas instantaneously that would be difficult in our grandparent's era.

Space Technology

Space became popular in the 1950s as the Cold War was taking place. Space became a weapon to fight with, and they could use it by advancing in aerospace. NASA was created in 1957 and was a step towards advancements in aeronautics and space. Fast forward to today, space technology includes cutting edge satellites, spacecraft, and space stations. Space infrastructure offers daily services such as GPS systems and weather forecasting to aid in day to day life. Weather forecasting allow us to predict the weather and choose what to wear, while GPS allows us to navigate through-traffic. Though space technology didn't affect people in the 1950s, it has made a huge impact today. They give us many benefits that wouldn't have existed back then. These benefits have made different aspects of life convenient.
