Introduction

Oftentimes, groundshakers are overlooked because of the industry they are in and who they are. Such is the case of Carol Shaw, the first female game designer, due to the fact that she partook in a male dominated field and the fact that gaming had not gained traction until the internet made let’s plays popular and put the tools for game creation in the hands of average people of a variety of backgrounds. However, it all had to start from somewhere or from someone so let’s take a look at pioneer Carol Shaw!





Carol Shaw

This is Carol Shaw, the first female game designer. She graduated in 1977 with a bachelor degree from UC Berkeley in electrical engineering and computer science and gained a master degree in Computer Science as well. Carol Shaw won the Industry Icon Award at The 2017 Game Awards. Here are a few quotes from her:

"I was good at math. I entered a bunch of math contests and won awards. Of cause people would say, “Gee, you’re good at math – for a girl. That was kind of annoying. Why shouldn’t girls be good at math?"
