 Fundraising for Hurricane Relief

This year, the United States was hit hard by natural disasters during hurricane season. Two strong hurricanes and a few more minor ones landed in the US and caused devastation to thousands of people. Hurricane Harvey was a category 4 hurricane that made landfall in Texas. It flooded the city of Houston and caused major damage. The city and its people are still recovering.

To help in the recovery process, the Walled Lake Central High School Interact Club, of which I am the Vice President of, decided to organize a fundraiser. We decided to arrange a bowling fundraiser night in coordination with the Interact Clubs of Walled Lake Northern High School and Novi High School.

The fundraiser was called Bowling for Boxes. To participate, students had to donate $15. In addition to bowling, there were also various games going on, such as musical chairs. Pizza, pop, and candy were also being sold. All proceeds were donated to ShelterBox, a non-profit organization that helps dislocated natural disaster survivors.

I used my own personal strengths and powers to ensure that the fundraiser was a success. I used my organization skills to coordinate meetings with the board members of the other Interact Clubs. I also spread the word out about the fundraiser by placing an advertisement in the daily announcements in my school. In addition, I created flyers and told many people about it.

In the end, the fundraiser was a total success. We had more people participating than we expected, and we exceeded our goals by raising a total of $1344. All of the money went to ShelterBox. All of the money went towards helping those most affected by recent natural disasters.

2017 Hurricane Facts

The huricane season of 2017 started on April 1st and will end on November 30th. There were numerous tropical storms and hurricanes. The biggest hurricanes were Hurricane Harvey (Category 4), Hurricane Irma (Category 5), Hurricane Jose (Category 4), and Hurricane Maria (Category 5).

All 4 major hurricanes this season impacted areas of the United States.

Hurricane Harvey devastated many islands, several Central American countries, and Southern and Eastern United States. Texas and Louisiana were hit particularly hard by Harvey.

Hurricane Irma affected numerous Caribbean Islands and areas of the Eastern United States, mostly Florida.

Hurricane Jose damaged a few Caribbean Islands and areas in New England.

Hurricane Maria severely impacted regions in the Caribbean including the U.S. Virgin Islands, Turks and Caicos, Haiti, and Puerto Rico. It also affected areas in the Southeastern United States, the United Kingdom, France, and Spain.

Hurricane Harvey is noted as the costliest tropical cyclone ever, causing nearly $200 billion in damages.

Thousands of people's lives were drastically changed due to the devastation caused by these hurricanes. Many people in Puerto Rico will be without power for several months atleast. There is a shortage of food and water on the island: there is simply not enought to sustain everyone. Homes were ripped apart by these hurricanes. There are many people without any shelter at all.
