The Negatives of a Week Without Technology I rely really heavily on technology, as I’m sure many others do, so my week without technology would definitely be a tough one. The lack of a cell phone would be huge. We use our cell phones for so many things, from an alarm clock to a movie player to an instant research and communication device. All of those things wouldn’t be so easily accessible, and one device to manage a hundred things would be turned into a hundred devices, each managing one thing. My classes post most of their assignments online, which I think would be the hardest type of technology to escape. At the beginning of the week, I would need to print out all my assignments so I could access them, while my classmates can do so with just a few taps of a touchscreen. The lack of Google would also impair my learning, so I would have to head to the library after school so I could find information to complete essays and other assignments. The thing I would miss most from my phone is music. I use it whenever I can, whether it be during lunch or while doing schoolwork. I use music to help me focus in my work, and not having easy access to it would make life a little more boring. I would try to use an cassette player or a radio to combat this. The use of books or cable television would also be some great alternative entertainment sources. Without digital technology, life would be much harder in general. Things that take milliseconds, like looking up formulas on Google could take hours of searching. Almost everybody relies on digital technology in their lives, from children watching YouTube videos to corporations with influence all over the world The Positives of a Week Without Technology I believe I would be MUCH more productive in a week without technology. Technology usually distracts me to some extent, and the removal of it would be tough, but overall good. I would probably finish my work ahead of time, and have much more free time. The lack of technology would give me much more free time, which would allow me to do the things I love with ease. For example, I’ve really been wanting to start a garden in my yard, and I could do so if I had more free time. I also think that the lack of technology would allow me to be able to develop my own hobbies and interests hindered by social media. While I believe that the effect that social media has can be immensely positive, at times, seeing details of other people's’ lives make you want to change your own. This effect can cause us to forget about our own interests and talents. The lack of social media would allow me to develop these free of outside influence. Something that I really miss doing from before digital technology became such an integral part of my daily life is visiting the library frequently. In my week without technology, I believe I would be there all the time. The library provides not only learning and resources, but also entertainment, with the countless number of books and other materials they provide. I would love to be able to read and explore the beautiful bookshelves again, and the lack of technology would give me the perfect opportunity to do so.
